The Summit Choral Society's children's program, Summit Children's Choir (SCC), is a music education and performance program for children and youth in the 2nd through 12th grade emphasizing individual understanding and development of musical skills. It is one of Northeast Ohio's premier choral arts organizations!
In January, May and August/September we holdinterview/auditionsfor children in the 2nd through 10th grades for placement into one of the class levels at our South campus located at Coventry High School. Classes for beginning singers in 2nd and 3rd grade are also held at our satellite campuses - no audition required.
Your singer should come to the audition/interview prepared to sing a familiar song of any length. The children will be asked a few questions about their own interest and experience in music. During the interview, parents and/or guardians will learn more about the Summit Children's Choir Program. The entire session will take less than one hour. Children accepted into the SCC program will be notified of their acceptance and class level immediately upon the completion of their audition.
Our comprehensive choral music program emphasizes vocal growth, music literacy and performance readiness. It is designed to be a natural supplement for school music programs.
Each child is individually evaluated and placed into one of the training ensembles matched to their own musical experience and demonstrated skill level. The singers then attend weekly training/rehearsal sessions with our Kodaly-trained professional music teachers from September through May on Monday evenings at Coventry High School or our satellite campuses. Each singer progresses at his/her own speed and ability to grasp the musical skills required for advancing to the next training level.
During the season, the children develop as an ensemble and the season includes on-stage concert performances in December and May. At the end of each season in May, children's vocal skills are assessed during class to determine their progression and placement for the next season starting in September.
Tuition for the full season, August through May, is $395 per child, plus a $20 Parent's Association Fee which includes sheet music, t-shirt, year pin, and admission to special events. Tuition for the second half of the season, January through May, is $195 per child, plus a $10 Parent's Association Fee. Many families choose a monthly payment plan which is available through the Summit Choral Society office.
Vocal teachers and vocal instructors from The University of Akron recommend the training of the Summit Children's Choir program over voice lessons for young children's voices.
We also offer an annual Summer Vocal Camp experience (auditions are not required for camp) each year for one week in June. Click here for more details! Call our offices at 330-434-SING (7464) to sign up. The week culminates in a performance with all singers!
